The Big Game?

“The Big Game?” A college football rivalry championship? The high-stakes TV poker tournament? An Esports worldwide battle?

Your professional life.

Having a meaningful occupation is not a game. It’s work. Most people will have three career changes over their lifetime, with an average of 10 to 12 different jobs. The business of work is so important that Harvard University began a study in 1938 correlating money and health to professional success. The 85-year research project, released this past year, found unsurprisingly that social relationships played a large role in job satisfaction.

This isn’t an in-depth piece on the psychology and economics of how to find success at the office. And I’m a firm believer that surveys and statistics don’t always speak for themselves.

But as a communications professional, I would argue that we shouldn’t be afraid to articulate how we think about our professional lives.

What’s working. What isn’t. How do we support each other in the workplace? How can we be a more valued workforce? What is the best use of our talent? How will we commit to positive development?

Your career is not a roll of the dice. Bluffing doesn’t lead to happiness. Speaking up and speaking out, in whatever form that takes for you, might be an important move to take your game to the next level.
