Playing with Fire

Decorative Wave

Perhaps you’ve heard of the Greek demigod, Prometheus, the ‘thief of fire.’ According to the legend, cunning Prometheus betrayed the gods to steal fire for humanity’s survival. And although he was punished for his audacity, Prometheus is remembered as the father of innovation, arts, and science in Greek culture. For better or worse, Prometheus took a risk and played with fire.

Think about the last time you took a risk with your business communication. What was the outcome? Perhaps you lost a client or garnered some bad press. Maybe you tapped into an entirely new market or gained valuable insight into your constituents’ desires. In the same breath, words can spread influence like wildfire or extinguish it just as quickly. Each time you communicate, remember that you, too, are playing with fire.

A good communication strategy incorporates calculated risk. If you don’t speak boldly and stand out from the crowd, you’re forgettable. Yet, if you move forward without due consideration of the consequences, you’re sure to fail. Striking this delicate balance in communication isn’t easy, but it’s essential in order to make a positive impact with your constituents.

When crafting your next piece of communication, take a risk. Be bold. Be remembered.
