In a Word

Decorative Wave

Impeccable. A single word sentence. Absolutely. Brilliant.

As I’m often reminded, “No, is a complete sentence!” Many times, people think of these sorts of words in terms of headlines. A recent edition of Time Magazine featured a photo of a prominent athlete with one word emblazed on the cover. Unstoppable. The word Free, displayed in big, bright letters across a social post, will get noticed. Convicted makes a splashy news caption.

Communicators spend a lot of time contemplating word choices. We want to be… Interesting. Clever. Bold. We also need to make certain that ideas, deliverables, and actions reach constituencies in specific terms which speak clearly and concisely.

Attention spans have dwindled. We are busy people. It has become more important than ever to choose our words carefully. It’s crucial to get to the point while still making sense, adding value, and creating a positive environment where transparency, understanding, and engagement are welcomed.

Embrace the one word sentence. Not as a headline or hashtag, but as a pure writing technique. Think. Ask. Respond. It takes some practice, but you might be surprised with the results.
